What is an athletic trainer?
Certified athletic trainers or ATCs are highly qualified medical professionals educated in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from athletic competition. As part of a complete healthcare team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a physician. In many cases, the ATC acts as a liaison between healthcare professionals, athletic administrators, coaches, parents, and athletes. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.
Specifically, the certified athletic trainer possesses knowledge and skill in the following practice areas:
- Evidence-based practice
- Prevention and health promotion
- Clinical injury examination
- Acute care of injury and illness
- Therapeutic interventions
- Psychosocial strategies and referral
- Health care administration
- Professional development and responsibility

Education
Certified athletic trainers have, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in athletic training. The broad spectrum of study includes, but is not limited to, human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, injury prevention and treatment, nutrition, and psychology/counseling. In addition, most athletic trainers continue their education after receiving their bachelor’s degree. Over 70% of all certified athletic trainers possess either a master’s or doctorate. In the state of New Jersey, that figure rises to over 75%.

Certification and License
To become a certified athletic trainer, a student must graduate with bachelor's or master’s degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification (BOC). Once certified, he or she must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified. Athletic trainers must also work in collaboration with a physician and within their state practice act. In addition, the state of New Jersey requires all practicing athletic trainers to be licensed by the state.
