Some math courses require preparatory work ahead of time, due to the advanced pace or content in the class. Some 8th graders qualify to take Algebra I in middle school. The letter below outlines expectations for students and parent cooperation as we look to best prepare our students for success in this accelerated course pathway.
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child has been identified as a candidate for enrolling in Algebra I at LMS for 8th grade. In order to be eligible for this course, your child must show very strong performance in 7th grade math-- congratulations on your child demonstrating such strong math performance!
Algebra I is a fully high school-level course aligned to the same NJ State Learning Standards (NJSLS) as the high school Algebra I course. Therefore, we strongly recommend that all students enrolled in Algebra I complete a summer preparation course to help solidify important pre-Algebra concepts and build a cohesive cohort of Algebra I students with the teacher that will be teaching the course during the 2023-24 year.
Students who miss any of the days of Algebra I Prep will have missed certain key concepts or practice opportunities. While we do not exclude students from taking the course if they miss a day(s), it is important that parents understand and acknowledge that participation in the entirety of the prep course is extremely important to your child’s success in Algebra I at LMS.
If you do not wish for your child to enroll in Algebra I because of a conflict with the summer prep program, please reach out as soon as possible to your child’ school counselor or building administration.
The Algebra I Prep program will run from 8:00-12:30 on the following dates:
July 5-6
July 10-13
July 17-20
July 24-27
July 31- August 3
I understand that attendance in the Algebra I Prep program is essential to my child’s success in Algebra I at LMS. I understand that missing session(s) means that my child may not be fully prepared for the Algebra I course in September, and my child may need to complete extra practice, makeup work, etc. in order to better be prepared.
